A conference phone is a special form of telephone, primarily built for use with several people in telephone conference calls. Several participants dial into a virtual conference room in these conference calls. Speak to each other or just listen, depending on the purpose of the call. The conference phone typically has a keypad for dialing phone numbers. It also has a monitor, but no removable handset, in comparison to a regular phone. Instead, it is fitted with one or more loudspeakers and microphones to allow for easy listening and use without hands. This enables several participants in a room to follow the conversation and make their own contributions to the discussion.
Conference phones also often have speakers and microphones directed in different directions, to ensure maximum intelligibility even with large numbers of participants in one room. Additionally, sensitivity to the sound and microphone can be easily changed. Conference phones can be used for analog, ISDN and VoIP connections, and as network telephones for different telephone systems. Some devices also have the option to attach human, external microphones to enhance voice quality even further. Wireless conference phones are also available that communicate via DECT and WiFi.
